‘Will you come to South Africa with me?’ asked the guy I’d met a few days before. As you do to someone you’ve only just met.

I was a bit surprised. I didn’t say yes or no.

A few months later we got married.

That was 27 years ago and we still haven’t got to South Africa yet. But, there is time. Maybe. And we do at least know a few people in Jo’burg with Land Rovers so that’s always a good start. Even if Cape Town would be my first destination.

In the meantime I can wander up to the Alameda botanical gardens and look at the small part of Gibraltar that is home to South Africa.

The gardens have separate sections for plants from similar climates all over the world.

African lilies. Utterly stunning. I know they are African lilies from South Africa because for once, there was a sign that said so.

  1. Aah! Alemeda Gardens! Scene of our necessarily chaste courting in the early 60’s.. Learning Spanish and just how far she would allow me to go!

My beloved…Eso es? Me… A tree. MB… aah! Bueno. ‘Un Arbol’ en Espanol. Me.. and what’s all this green stuff. MB. ‘Yerba’, y en Ingles? Me.. Grass. MB Oiga! Quedar te quieto! Me.. to my self ..I guess that means

‘Stoppit right NOW!’ And guess what ? It did!:-))

However the Gardens were used as a flowery back drop for our wedding photos in early ’62.

    • I can’t keep up with you dashing around my blogs!! Love the linguistic courting in the gardens πŸ˜€

I do think they are a fabulous place to get married though. Fifty years ago eh?

    • Thank you. I loved the structure of this flower. If I was clever at collages I could have put quite a few images together, but I haven’t got your technique. When I do it, it often looks like more is less πŸ˜‰

I loved the structure of this flower though, it looked so perfect. Ha! It is usually you telling me about the names of lilies πŸ˜€

  3. Now that is quite a new way to ask someone to marry you! LOL! Did you say yes because you thought you’re in for a trip to South Africa? Oh well, even if you did, I am sure you’re not sorry at all because you stayed with him for 27 years. Mine just had a guitar in his hand and looked like a geek (I have a thing for geeks) and 28 years later he still has his guitar and is still a geek. hahahah. Shows you, they just know how to win our hearts, don’t they? πŸ˜€

I love these African lilies and their colour and have quite a few of them in the garden. Absolutely stunning shots Kate. πŸ˜€

    • The non-proposal came later and wasn’t linked to SA. This was very early days. Will you come to SA with me and the inevitable – will you have sex with me. (Put rather more bluntly though)

This post is two years old. Coming up 29 in August. Sounds like we’re running similar timescales. Don’t think I’ve ever known any guitar geek types.

I thought the lily was quite beautiful. It stood very proud and tall with its elegant profusion of perfect blooms. How nice you have them in your garden. I suppose they would grow in mine seeing as they grow in the Gib botanical ones. When I am two legged again I will see what else they have in the SA corner.

      • Whahahahahaha! Now who can say no to that! LOL!

Didn’t even notice the date. I hardly ever worry about dates and time, unless it their birthdays and the anniversary. Mine I don’t even worry or bother about. Sounds like it then and we are blessed that we made it all this time for sure. πŸ˜€

LOL! I forgot to add the flyfishing with the guitar and geek. hahaha

They sure are and it’s so nice that they have such beautiful gardens there and especially the SA corner. I like that and would love to see more of what they have there. You do take beautiful shots. πŸ˜€

        • What? SA? πŸ˜‰

Our birthdays and wed ann are all neat dates. I’ve got the stage of forgetting how old I am, but not how long we’ve been together.

It’s so nice to have them so near. I don’t think they make enough of them. Money I suppose.

Thank you. Not really but they illustrate the point well enough.

          • No, the sex part. Pfffftttt! LOL!

The same here. Funny how our brains work. We must be getting younger then. LOL!

Yes, I suppose they do need money for gardens like that and it would be nice indeed. πŸ˜€

Oh, don’t sell yourself so short, but I know what you mean. I feel the same way about my photo’s. As long as it tells the story and they satisfy the eye, I am happy. πŸ˜€
