Kenny Koala is the second in my trio of fave childhood toys, along with Golly (two posts ago) and Teddy.

Naturally, as a koala bear, he comes from Australia. He was sent to me by my uncle and aunt, and two cousins, who emigrated to Adelaide in the 1950s before I was born.

My uncle was my father’s older brother, but I never met him. He never came back to the UK, although he did telephone my parents a couple of times in later years, his Yorkshire accent clearly coming down the telephone line from thousands of miles away. His wife came back for a visit, so I did meet her for a few hours. My cousins, too are a mystery to me, never having met them either.

But clearly when I was a kid, there was some sort of Christmas exchange, and Kenny was one of my presents, and I’ve also still got a book about a flying possum, whose name I forget.

Kenny, being more than 40 years old, and rapidly approaching 50, is now looking a bit thin around the edges, and his paws fell off some time ago. He has a little bottle of essential oil of eucalyptus next to him as I haven’t got a eucalyptus tree for him to feed on.

Koalas are not bears, they are marsupials, and they are in danger, partly due to loss of habitat, ie the eucalyptus trees. Find out more about koalas at the Australian Koala Foundation.

And, this is another of my photos linked to Reilly and Denny Cowspotdgos’ weekly photogame here. This one is, unsurprisingly, something from Australia.

  2. Kenny looks very comfortably settled in his seat and against this warm duotone background. he actually reminds me of a smaller version of a toy koala that my bro had when we were kids. as far as i know, he never was named, and i have no idea what happened to him.
i frequently borrowed him (don’t remember asking). not exactly sure where he came from, but i think an aunt (who has never been to Australia) was the one who gave it him. lots of mysteries surrounding him. but i do know that he was well-loved, as Kenny obviously has been. how nice that you still have him 🙂

    • He’s not very cuddly, but he has spent as much time in bed with me as anyone 🙂 OK,TMI there but I was always really taken with him, guess cos he looked like a proper animal unlike golly and teddy.

  3. Wish I still had my childhood favourites, but they were lost in a ‘move’ – my little Koala survived as so small, he wasn’t a toy.

  4. Aahh, he’s the ‘Bagpus’ of the Koala world 🙂
I don’t have any childhood faves left either Blue 😦
